My background with personalized learning using technology comes from composition, which if I was to compose music, I would use the online music notation software “Noteflight”. To present my own assignments I have done throughout the semester, I would use Microsoft PowerPoint for making presentations about my projects. When presenting using PowerPoint, this helps me to gain self-confidence when I am the main speaker in the room because as a teacher, it is important that I stand in the front to teach students about how work in a subject is done, and presenting skills is very essential when it comes to practice because that shows on how new learners learn from someone who knows it well, and how to apply the content to the class I am teaching.
About my skills, I would outline that teaching is one of the most essential because as an education minor, it is important that I have the prior experience of being a teacher. The second is composition, because as a musician, it is important that I have prior skills to compose because if I play a piece and have to adjust fingerings, it is important that I have the theory knowledge and composition skills. Lastly, it would be emotional awareness because as a teacher, I must also be aware of catering student’s emotion because if students are to learn well, they must have sufficient emotional support so that the right amount of encouragement is given when helping them to learn.
Mapping the route
For this course, my main goal is to enhance my teaching and learning skills, which by utilizing social media and GenAI for some help, I can still have my own theory applied into the material that I will teach, and to make music learning more fun and accommodating to learn because nowadays, technology is being used by many subjects being taught, which instead of just focusing to a centralized source, I would develop something on how the teacher and student would do the work together, and follow each learning process step by step to encourage more engagement within the class. That would go under practicing digital, networked, and open literacies in support of learning about social media and personalized learning because if there are too much focus on individual work, students would be less engaged because it could lead to miscommunication and misunderstanding, so I think it is important to also be inclusive when creating the curriculum for the class.
As sometimes I would need to be careful when making my own curriculum, I would mostly go and start off from the easiest of music theory because from past experiences, students aged 3-10 mostly start off with knowing about musical instruments, and hearing sounds and tones because as musical language is learned by melodic sounds and visual, I would start by creating a demonstration video in YouTube about how notes are sung in the movable do-solfege, because this builds the foundation on how kids would identify notes by hearing each sound.
Furthermore, what I also want to get out if this course is how I could apply social media to develop a personal learning network in support of my personal and professional development as a teacher because as a teacher, it is important to build prior skills before moving on to being the main subject of the classroom because as it requires more experience and knowledge, I would like to work more with my peers and improve collaboration skills at the same time, as collaboration is also needed as a teacher.
Anticipating Turbulance
If there is anything to face in this course, one thing I would expect is that how we should connect if we do the group projects because as we are all online in Microsoft teams, it is a little bit hard to know each member of this course but if I have more engagement contributions, it is a gap that is possible to fill because I can know on what is going on with the course, and it would also give me an opportunity to look on how my peers’ method can influence my learning, so that when I move on to become a teacher, I can use the skills I have gained in this course.
In conclusion, the goal to the end of this course is to understand multimedia learning, and apply technology to how I would teach, and know the correct practices on how technology is to be used when learning.
